FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS ABOUT FRAGRANCE

What is a 'sheer'
fragrance?
In a sheer fragrance,
the topnotes, midnotes and endnotes are smoothly blended
together so there is very little change in the fragrance
from first perception to dry down. Crabtree & Evelyn's
Sonoma Valley is one example of a sheer floral fragrance.
What does a 'green'
note smell like?
The classic green
note is grass or new-mown hay: fresh, clean, moist, a little
sweet but never cloying. Fragrances with green notes are
light, springlike scents, suggesting youth and innocence.
Crabtree & Evelyn's Aloe Vera contains a classic green
topnote.
What is a 'floriental'?
Oriental fragrances
blend warmth and mystery by including exotic spices, resins,
musk and precious woods; floral fragrances blend the scents
of many flowers. A floriental fragrance (like Crabtree &
Evelyn's Nantucket Briar) combines oriental notes with sweet
florals; the topnotes are often rich and fresh, with a warm,
exotic drydown.
What is a 'drydown'?
As a fragrance's more
volatile components -- the topnotes and midnotes --
evaporate, the endnotes linger and carry the body of the
fragrance. All fragrances change as they dry down, and all
fragrances are affected by each person's unique skin
chemistry, but the fragrance should remain true in
character. Perfumers use fixatives (aromatic ingredients
that 'fix' or prolong scent) in the drydown to ensure a
scent's longevity.
Why does a fragrance
last longer on some people than on others?
Fragrances are
basically oils that are absorbed by the skin like
moisturizers. People with light skin and hair have a
tendency towards dry skin, so the fragrance oils are
absorbed quickly. To help your fragrance last longer, layer
it by applying a matching body lotion to pulse points before
applying your perfume or cologne. Using oil-based creams and
oils will also help the fragrance last longer.
What is the
difference between Splashes, Colognes, Eaux de Toilette,
Eaux de Parfum, and Parfums?
Splashes are the
lightest, containing 3% or less of fragrance oil. Eau de
cologne contains 3-8% fragrance oil, while eau de toilette
has 6-10%. Eau de parfum contains 10-15%, and perfumes
contain more than 15%.
Are there special
fragrances for different times of day?
The time of day does
affect how we perceive fragrance. Our sense of smell is not
as keen in the morning as in the evening, so scented
products can be used at their fullest during the morning
hours to make the greatest impact. Many people, however,
choose to wear a more subtle scent during the working hours,
saving the richer, more complex fragrances for evenings.

How can you tell if a
fragrance has spoiled?
A scent has 'gone
off' when the color has changed or when you smell a sour or
resinous odour. Keeping a bottle of cologne in the
refrigerator extends the life and stability of the
fragrance.
(And chilled cologne
is especially refreshing on a hot day!)
Why do fragrances
smell different on different people?
Body chemistry, diet
and age affect fragrances on their skin. Also, fragrance
consists of many essential oils. Certain essential oils have
affinity to our skin, and they may be absorbed while others
may not. This creates an imbalance on the skin and accounts
for the difference.
Will any fragrance
last all day?
No. Some fragrance
notes last longer than others -- patchouli, sandalwood,
musk, vetiver, and other precious woods are particularly
tenacious -- but no fragrance will last all day. Fragrance
needs to be refreshed periodically during the day or
evening.
How much fragrance
should I apply to my skin?
This is a personal
choice. Each person's body chemistry and skin type determine
how much fragrance should be applied. Keep in mind that your
own nose may not be the most reliable predictor of when to
apply more fragrance. Your fragrance receptors often become
'fatigued' after prolonged exposure to a scent, and you may
think it has faded when, in fact, it's still quite strong.
The best way to tell when you need to reapply fragrance is
to ask friends for their opinion.
Are there additional
uses for a fragrance, other than application to the body?
You can splash a
little of your favorite fragrance into a bath, or add a few
drops to the water when washing your lingerie. Spray silk
flowers, or lightly mist your hairbrush with cologne before
brushing your hair.
